I recently got an e-mail asking which guage of wire I used to wire wrap my handmade jewelry. I use several wire guages to wire wrap my gemstone beads, but my favorite has to be 22 guage dead soft. It just molds around the bead perfectly when I am wire wrapping. If you are new to this, and afraid of ruining some sterling silver or gold filled, try practicing with the cheap stuff first, and most importantly… TAKE YOUR TIME….practice does make perfect. I look at some of my earlier wire wrapping jobs and think… Ewww… that’s pretty bad. For smaller beads, I like to use 24 guage dead soft (for daintier work it works better because the guage is smaller it’s easier to work with). Same this applies, take your time!
Wire wrapping doesn’t always go your way, once you get seasoned, you’ll know after a couple of wire wraps if it’s going to look crappy. When that happens I usually unravel what I’ve wire wrapped and start over. It can become a HUGE waste of wire reusing and unravelling. That’s when…STEP AWAY FROM THE BEAD… comes in!
So Good Luck and..
HAPPY WIRE WRAPPING!!!!

1I am a jewelry designer as well, but have bypassed wire wrapping because of the time I think it would take to become really good at it. I am too much of a perfectionist to do anything less than what I think is just right. I love the way the wire looks on these earrings though, really beautiful. Maybe I should rethink this!

2Nice article. I have been wire wrapping for about 5 years now. I am just getting started on putting beads into my wrapping. Even seasoned wrappers get frustrated so it is great to have a second or even third hobby to switch to.
Thanks

3I am brand new to the blog world (of course I am trying to get my website out there, so here goes!) and I have been Wrappin gemstones for a bit over a year. I was pleased to read your blog and amazed to see the earrings you’ve shown here. The funny thing is…. I have a Peruvian Chalcedony pendant and earring set that is almost identical to the one shown.
I so agree with the walking away thing you talked about. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve begun a wrap…. spent hours on trying to make it work…. And then had to walk away from it for a while. The truth is…. when I come back…. almost every time I’ve come back and been able to make it work! I rarely undo anything. Saves in waste too.
I too use various guages of wire. Thinner wire really comes in handy…. especially for wrappping pearls or gems with holes.
And as for the comment from the perfectionist…. I hope you’ve reconsidered and given yourself the opportunity to explore wire wrapping. I believe that whatever I’ve created…. Is Perfect. It may not be to my taste, but there’s others that will appreciate it. I found that to be my experience.
And last but not least…. check out my wrap at http://www.ImaGemation.etsy.com
Happy Wrappin!

4I like the 22 gauge half hard for beaded earrings and rings, etc, because the hardness holds the shape of the finished piece better (for my styles… looking at the one in your photo, I can see hard or soft would not make a difference except maybe in the earwire). Also, back when I started making wire jewelry (1988) all I could get was the hard wire so I’m used to it
I do use the soft wire for cab pendants with swirly designs, though.

6I absolutely love wire wrapping! I use larger cubic ziconia stones and sterling silver snake chains. I agree that the best way to learn is with the cheaper wire. Artistic Wire has some nice silver coated wire. Happy wrapping!
