I’ve been making my own earwires for over a year now. It’s a lot of fun and very gratifying. If you are just starting out and would like to get into making your own handmade earwires to go along with your handmade jewelry, here are some tips:
Personally, I like to use 1/2 hard wire for any earwire that I make. The gauge you use is entirely up to you, but I wouldn’t go smaller than 22g. As for shaping try using a pen or anything else you might think would work. I like to shape the earwire first, then make the loop at the bottom.
It does take a lot of patience and practice, when I first started, I got so frustrated and discouraged that I completely gave up for about 6 months. So I would get a spool of craft wire before using sterling silver, gold filled and other precious metals.
If you don’t have the time to make your own but have ideas, check out my online findings shop! I do take custom orders! So take a peek

1I make my own ear wires with memory wire and head pins! I use ring memory wire and then file it with a metal nail file, cheap and works great!
